Founded in 1963, the Presque Isle Historical Society seeks to study, preserve, and promote the history, local culture, heritage, and physical artifacts of Presque Isle, Maine for future generations. The Presque Isle Historical Society strives to accomplish this mission through a variety of public programs and activities.

The beginnings of the museum extend to the early 1970s, when the University of Maine at Presque Isle received two substantial natural history collections. The Northern Maine Museum of Science is located at Folsom Hall at The University of Maine at Presque Isle on south Main Street.
